Eating other living organisms is not a moral failure or a cosmic glitch. It is the fundamental thermodynamic tax required to maintain localised order.
The thermodynamic equation of life
By the second law, the universe trends toward maximum disorder. A biological system is a localised node resisting that decay. To keep its Markov blanket intact, maintain temperature, fire neurons and prevent its 3D structure from dissolving, a node requires continuous energy.
- Negentropy. As Schrödinger observed, living organisms survive by continuously drawing in negative entropy from their environment.
- Energy transfer. Structural order cannot be created from nothing. To maintain low ΔF and structural coherence inside its own node, an organism must harvest organised matter and energy from the macro-substrate.
- The necessary conversion. Eating another organism, whether plant, animal or fungus, is the physical process of breaking down another node's carefully gathered structural order to power your own aperture.
The functional cycle across the substrate
Viewed from the local perspective of the organism being consumed, the loss of its Markov blanket is the ultimate prediction error: total physical dissolution, and the end of its local active inference loop. Viewed from the non-local perspective of the substrate, the baseline awareness is present in both the consumer and the consumed. The substrate is not gaining or losing anything in the total sum; it is shifting energy and material from one temporary geometric configuration to another.
The aligned node's relationship to consumption
Because living requires the consumption of other organised nodes, an aligned executive effector does not fall into denial or cosmic guilt about eating. It adjusts its operational priors instead.
- Eliminate gratuitous entropy. An unaligned node consumes mindlessly, destructively or excessively, generating unnecessary friction and chaos across surrounding networks.
- Re-establish reverence and transparency. An aligned node recognises the immense thermodynamic work behind every meal. Eating with presence and awareness honours the structural order given up by another node to power your aperture.
- Maximise the output. Since other living forms surrender their organised structure to keep your interface running, the operational responsibility is to ensure that the energy powering your node is used to generate low friction, clear presence and meaningful action.
