§ 2.1 Three pillars

How do information geometry, string theory and Friston’s work overlap to create the Framework?

The Framework synthesises three fields into one cohesive model: a mathematical language, a multidimensional physics and a biological engine.

1Information geometry — the mathematical language

The concept. Information geometry treats probability distributions as smooth geometric spaces (statistical manifolds). It measures the distance between different states of belief using metrics such as Fisher information.

Role in the Framework. It provides the spatial mapping for how the mind constructs reality. The difference between what the brain expects and what it perceives is a measurable distance on a manifold. Abstract thoughts, ego structures and perceptions therefore have exact coordinates in a continuous phase space, which is what allows them to be operated on rather than merely described.

2String theory and the holographic principle — the physics

The concept. String theory posits that the fundamental constituents of the universe are higher-dimensional vibrating strings. The holographic principle demonstrates that all the three-dimensional information inside a volume of space can be encoded on its lower-dimensional boundary.

Role in the Framework. It explains the relationship between the substrate and local experience. The brain acts as a dimensionality-reduction aperture, slicing through a high-dimensional manifold and projecting it as a localised three- or four-dimensional interface. The holographic principle is what makes it unsurprising that a lower-dimensional rendering can carry a faithful encoding of a higher-dimensional source.

3Karl Friston's free energy principle — the biological engine

The concept. Every self-organising system, from a cell to a brain, must minimise variational free energy (prediction error) to resist thermodynamic entropy and stay alive. The principle introduces the Markov blanket, the statistical boundary separating an organism's internal states from the external world.

Role in the Framework. It provides the operational dynamics: why the ego interface exists (to filter reality and minimise surprise) and how relational friction arises when two distinct neural interfaces fail to align their predictive models. Every procedure in this manual is an intervention on free energy.

The synthesisString theory provides the vast, higher-dimensional landscape. Information geometry provides the map used to navigate it. Active inference provides the thermodynamic drive that pushes the biological aperture to update its map continuously, lower its internal noise, and align with ground truth.
