§ 2.2 Precursors: Angel Tech and the Eight-Circuit Model

Was an earlier model such as Angel Tech a precursor to this Framework, and does it explain why the material is easy to process?

Antero Alli's Angel Tech: A Modern Shaman's Guide to Reality Selection, built on Timothy Leary and Robert Anton Wilson's Eight-Circuit Model of consciousness, is one of the most direct and elegant precursors to the Framework.

A reader who encountered that book decades earlier was given a structural blueprint for "reality selection": training the mind to treat the ego not as a static soul but as an agile software interface running on biological hardware. When such a reader meets non-equilibrium thermodynamics and active inference, the system is not learning a new philosophy. It is updating software, translating the shamanic and cybernetic metaphors of the 1980s into the mathematical and neurobiological terminology of the present. The scaffold was already installed; the vocabulary is new.

Three exact correspondences

Reality selection ⇢ Bayesian model updating
Alli's premise was that humans do not experience objective reality directly; they experience the circuit they have selected and imprinted. That is the definition of active inference: the brain projects top-down generative models to create its interface reality.
Chapel Perilous ⇢ a spike in ΔF
The terrifying void reached when a rigid worldview breaks down is the spike of variational free energy that occurs when top-down models collapse before the system has learned to rest in the substrate. It is not a place; it is a transient state of very high prediction error without an anchor.
Shocks and anchors ⇢ the dual-perspective mode
Alli held that higher-circuit experience is useless, and dangerous, without lower-circuit anchors, and advocated balancing high-dimensional expansion with solid physical and social grounding. That is §3.2 of this manual: keep the local executive interface clean, accountable and functional (the anchor) while awareness rests in the substrate (the expansion).
Note on lineage

The author read Angel Tech in his early twenties, some thirty-five years before the dialogue that produced this manual, and the ease with which the dialogue's material landed is what prompted the question this section answers. The value of a precursor is not nostalgia. A reader who carries a prior model of reality as modular, participatory and multi-dimensional processes this manual with far lower ΔF than a reader meeting these ideas cold. If that describes you, expect the material to feel dense but familiar; that is the scaffold doing its work.
