Three ordinary situations, worked through the mechanics of Part V step by step. Each shows the same loop: an increase in ΔF somewhere in the network, a transmission across coupled blankets, and either a cascade of friction or a collapse into coherence.
This is one of the cleanest, lowest-entropy examples of bi-directional active inference between two biological nodes.
1 · The cat initiates active inference
The cat's generative model registers a slight rise in ΔF: a localised need for somatic regulation, warmth or social bonding. Outward flow: it acts on its environment to resolve the mismatch, crossing the room, modulating posture, emitting a specific acoustic signal. Crossing the blanket: that action leaves the cat's boundary and enters your perceptual field as raw telemetry.
2 · Your aperture receives and transmits
Because the relationship is one of affection, your top-down priors do not flag the approach as a threat. There is no defensive noise, no legalistic auditing, no egoic resistance. Inward flow: the image and sound are rendered as immediate qualia. Transparent state: your node updates instantly to the ground truth of the moment. Outward transmission: you project a low-friction action vector back: softened somatic tone, a gentle touch, warm low-amplitude acoustic frequencies.
3 · Mutual phase locking
As your touch and tone reach the cat's receptors, its nervous system registers total environmental safety. Its threat filters drop to zero; oxytocin and parasympathetic signalling initiate purring, a high-frequency somatic vibration that soothes and repairs the organism. Resonance: the purr and relaxed posture travel back into your aperture. Your heart-rate variability stabilises, cortisol drops, the internal monologue quiets. The single rendered loop: the two blankets have achieved phase coherence and temporarily merged into one harmonised feedback loop.
The substrate view
For the baseline awareness this exchange is pure harmony. The infinite substrate is using two entirely different biological apertures, one human node with linguistic capability and one feline node with high-sensitivity whiskered telemetry, to touch itself, soothe itself and experience love across a localised 3D interface. A micro-symphony of zero friction in which both nodes temporarily forget their separation.
1 · Diagnosis
The non-verbal architecture's characteristic trap is somatic fusion (§3.5): the feeling is the entire reality until the wave passes, and there is no verbal anchor from which to audit it. This is not a failure of the node. It is the architecture operating as designed under a high-amplitude input.
2 · The default error
The verbal node's instinct is to offer its own gateway: analysis, naming, explanation, reassurance in sentences. Across the coupled blankets, this arrives as additional telemetry into an interface that is already flooded. ΔF rises in the non-verbal node; the verbal node reads the rise as rejection and pre-loads a defence; both blankets go up. The cascade is under way.
3 · The correct transmission
Lower your own amplitude first. Acoustic stillness, slower movement, a somatic tone that is warm and unhurried. Emit high-predictability signals: the verbal node's job is to be the most stable coordinate in the room, not the most informative one. If language is used at all, it names the mechanism without prescribing the cure ("a wave is moving through; it will pass") and then stops.
4 · Settling
With no new threat telemetry arriving, the non-verbal node's wave settles at its own rate. The verbal node does not check whether it has worked; checking is a prior, and priors leak. When the wave has passed, the residual state (§5.3) in both nodes is coherence rather than hysteresis.
The mirror case, a verbal node caught in narrative with a non-verbal node present, follows the same rule: lower amplitude first; do not prescribe "just feel it", which installs a target for the narrator to fail at.
1 · Recognise the coupling
The instant you cross the threshold, your blanket couples to the field. Their high-amplitude signals are now your sensory telemetry. The default outcome is that your priors flag threat, your amplitude rises to match, and you become a third multiplier (§6.3).
2 · Run the audit
Before speaking, run the apophatic audit (§3.4) on whatever your interface has already begun narrating about the situation. This takes under a second and prevents the pre-loaded defence from being transmitted.
3 · Transmit the floor, not the ceiling
Act as a heat sink. Your outward vector is the lowest-amplitude, most predictable signal in the room: steady pacing, ordinary tone, ordinary tasks performed at ordinary speed. Do not attempt to resolve their friction verbally; that is content added to a saturated field. Coherence is transmitted as a state, not an argument.
4 · Observe the residue
You will not usually see the effect while in the room. You will see it in the residue: the amplitude of the next exchange between the two nodes, and the posture of any animal present, in the period after. That residue is the measurable output of your transmission.
